Daily Paint #643. Summer Wars by Cryptid-Creations
Warning: tl;dr —personal crap (you can delete the text portion if you want to reblog the drawing, I don’t mind)
When I was 7 years old, I went to go see the Digimon movie in theaters. The film was a poor attempt by Fox Kids to merge three different Digimon movies together and pretend that it was a cohesive plot. But as I was a young kid and obsessed with the show (…that would be putting it lightly) —I managed to drag my parents into bringing me to see it three times, much to their discontent.
It’s still a REALLY fond memory for me, and despite the US versions flaws, I can’t say a part of me doesn’t still enjoy it. The Japanese versions are much better though.
But one thing that really always stood out for me was the 2nd portion of the film called “Our War Game”, where an intelligent computer virus threatens to destroy the internet and take control of nuclear weapons. The concept was so awesome, but I couldn’t help but think it was way too short (and kind of limited by the Digimon IP).
But a few years ago, Mamoru Hosoda, who directed the original short, went ahead and made his idea into a feature film called Summer Wars. And DAMN is it ever awesome, I finally got around to watching it tonight and I was glued to the TV like I was 7 years old and watching the Digimon movie in the cinema all over again. I really don’t want to spoil much, but the character depth and the familial themes add so much to the story. If you recall liking the original digimon short —definitely watch this!
